You’ve Asked and Thornton is Delivering: Daily Usage Data in the WaterSmart Portal
Customers frequently ask if we can give them daily water usage data, especially when they are investigating a high-water bill. Thornton Water is excited to announce the launch of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) data. The new feature in WaterSmart will show daily water use patterns to help customers manage usage and detect leaks more quickly. This data is available to most residential water customers now and will be available to all residential customers by the end of the year. As it becomes available in each area, customers will be able to access it in the portal.
Daily Data (Hourly tab) – detailed meter readings taken automatically daily. This data helps customers:
- Track water usage in near real-time.
- Spot leaks quickly before they become a problem.
- Understand usage patterns, like outdoor watering or peak times
Billing Data (Overview tab) – official meter register readings Thornton uses to calculate your monthly bill.
- Taken once per monthly billing cycle.
- Measures total water used over the billing period.
Why both?
Daily data provides insights and tools for managing your water use, while billing data ensures accurate and consistent charges on your account.
You can access your billing and daily data through the WaterSmart portal. This user-friendly platform allows you to monitor your water use in near real-time, set up leak alerts, and evaluate how changing your water habits can affect your usage and your bill. For more information on AMI, contact water@thorntonwater.com.
The meter sends or transmits only encrypted consumption measurements and meter status information to the city. All data is encrypted using industry-standard processes and technologies, and no private customer-identifiable information is transmitted to or from the meter.
Occasionally, you will see missing hourly or daily data in WaterSmart. If you are missing more than 50% of hourly reads, you will only be able to view daily usage. Missing daily data does not affect your monthly billed consumption.
If you have questions or notice missing data, contact us at water@thorntonwater.com or 720-977-6600, so we can conduct a review of your account or email meter staff at utiloperation@thorntonco.gov to investigate the meter communication issues.
WaterSmart uses customer averages and typical water–use patterns to identify unusual water use or potential leaks. Identified leaks are generally accurate, but don’t always tell the full story. For instance, someone watering new sod may have a potential leak identified due to higher-than-normal water use.
If you’re able to locate and repair a leak, you may be eligible for a water bill adjustment. To request a review, submit a receipt showing the repair or replacement part to Thornton’s Utility Billing team by calling 303-538-7370 or emailing UtilBilling@thorntonco.gov.
Customers will still be charged for all water use. However, Utility Billing will determine whether some or all the higher-tier charges can be credited to the account. Learn more about how water use tiers affect your water bill under the 2026 water rates section below.
Make sure the email and phone number on your accounts are current, so you don’t miss important alerts about continuous water use or possible leaks. An outdated email could mean missed alerts, undetected leaks, and higher bills. We recommend checking and updating your email and phone number in the following locations:
- Utility Billing – call 303-538-7370, email UtilBilling@thorntonco.gov, or update your information in Paymentus, the billing and payment portal.
- WaterSmart, our leak detection and water use monitoring portal. We recommend putting the name of the property manager or on-site representative as an additional portal user, if needed.
